How A Fetal Reduction Is Performed

The procedure is done under ultrasound guidance . A thin needle is inserted through the abdomen into the uterus, and a medication is injected into the selected fetus or its umbilical cord to stop its heart. We use lidocaine which is a commonly used numbing agent that is safe for the patient.

Health of the pregnant person: Carrying multiple fetuses can increase the risk of pregnancy complications, such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, preterm labor, and preterm delivery. Reducing the number of fetuses can lower these risks.

Health of the fetuses: Multiple pregnancies also carry higher risks for the fetuses, including premature birth, low birth weight, and developmental problems. Fetal reduction can increase the chances of healthy outcomes for the remaining fetuses.

Personal or ethical reasons: Some people may have personal or ethical concerns about carrying multiple fetuses to term and may choose fetal reduction for these reasons.
